Army Day
The Founding Day of the People's Liberation Army of China, abbreviated as Army Day, is observed on August 1st every year. On August 1, 1927, the Communist Party of China led the Nanchang Uprising, firing the first shot of armed resistance against the Kuomintang reactionaries, marking the beginning of the CPC's independent leadership of armed struggle and the creation of a revolutionary army. To commemorate this major historical event, on July 11, 1933, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic decided to designate August 1st as the founding anniversary of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. After the founding of New China, this commemorative day was renamed as the Founding Day of the People's Liberation Army of China. Army Day is an important festival for the people's army, embodying the Party's absolute leadership over the army and promoting the glorious traditions and fine conduct of the people's army. Every Army Day, grand commemorative activities are held across the country, especially in the military, to cherish the memory of revolutionary martyrs, honor advanced models, enhance national defense awareness, and inspire officers and soldiers to fight bravely to defend national security and people's happiness.
The origin of Army Day is closely related to the Nanchang Uprising. In 1927, the Kuomintang reactionaries betrayed the revolution, launched an anti-communist coup, and massacred Communist Party members and revolutionary masses on a large scale, plunging the Chinese revolution into a low ebb. From the bloody lesson, the Communist Party of China realized that it must establish its own armed force. At 2 a.m. on August 1, 1927, under the leadership of Zhou Enlai, He Long, Ye Ting, Zhu De, Liu Bocheng and others, the Communist Party of China launched the Nanchang Uprising, firing the first shot of armed resistance against the Kuomintang reactionaries. The insurgent army numbered more than 20,000 and occupied Nanchang City, but due to being outnumbered, the insurgent army later moved south and failed in Guangdong. Although the Nanchang Uprising ultimately failed, it has great historical significance: it marked the beginning of the Communist Party of China's independent leadership of revolutionary war, creation of a people's army, and armed seizure of power, opening a new era of the Chinese revolution. On July 11, 1933, the Provisional Central Government of the Chinese Soviet Republic, based on the suggestion of the Central Revolutionary Military Committee, decided to designate August 1st as the founding anniversary of the Chinese Workers' and Peasants' Red Army. Since then, August 1st has become the Army Day of the People's Liberation Army of China.
