Youth Day
Youth Day originates from the anti-imperialist and patriotic "May Fourth Movement" of 1919 in China. To inherit and carry forward the "May Fourth" spirit, in 1939, the Northwest Youth National Salvation Federation of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region designated May 4th as China Youth Day. Youth Day is a festival for Chinese youth, reflecting the country's emphasis and expectations for young people. The May Fourth Movement is a milestone event in modern Chinese history, marking the beginning of the New Democratic Revolution. The core of the May Fourth spirit is "patriotism, progress, democracy, and science," inspiring generation after generation of Chinese youth to strive for national prosperity and national rejuvenation. Every May 4th, various commemorative activities are held across the country to honor outstanding youth and encourage young people to inherit the May Fourth tradition, shoulder the responsibilities of the times, and contribute youthful strength to realizing the Chinese Dream of national rejuvenation.
Youth Day originated from the May Fourth Movement on May 4, 1919. After the end of World War I, in January 1919, the victorious countries held a "peace conference" in Paris, France. China, as one of the victorious countries, put forward legitimate demands to abolish foreign privileges in China and cancel the "Twenty-One Demands," but the Paris Peace Conference, manipulated by imperialist powers, not only rejected China's demands but also decided to transfer Germany's interests in Shandong to Japan. When the news reached China, it aroused strong anger among the people nationwide. On May 4, 1919, more than 3,000 students in Beijing gathered at Tiananmen Square and then held demonstrations, raising slogans such as "fight for national rights externally, punish national traitors internally," "cancel the Twenty-One Demands," and "refuse to sign the peace treaty." The movement quickly spread nationwide, with workers going on strike and merchants closing shops, forming a nationwide anti-imperialist and patriotic movement. The May Fourth Movement was a turning point from the old democratic revolution to the new democratic revolution in China, an epochal event in modern Chinese history. To commemorate the May Fourth Movement and carry forward the May Fourth spirit, in 1939, the Northwest Youth National Salvation Federation of the Shaanxi-Gansu-Ningxia Border Region designated May 4th as China Youth Day. In December 1949, the Government Administration Council of the Central People's Government officially announced May 4th as China Youth Day.
