Chunfen Solar Term
Spring Equinox (Chunfen) is the fourth solar term of the 24 solar terms, occurring around March 20-22 when the sun reaches 0 degrees (or 360 degrees) celestial longitude. The "fen" (分) in Chunfen has two meanings: first, it equally divides the season - Spring Equinox sits exactly in the middle of the ninety days between Start of Spring and Start of Summer, bisecting spring; second, it equally divides day and night - on Spring Equinox day, the sun directly illuminates the equator, making day and night equal length worldwide at 12 hours each. During Spring Equinox, the Big Dipper's handle points directly east to the Mao position, marking spring's astronomical midpoint. After Spring Equinox, the sun's direct point continues moving north, Northern Hemisphere days gradually lengthen while nights shorten, and temperatures continue rising. Astronomically, Spring Equinox marks spring's true beginning and serves as the boundary between spring in the Northern Hemisphere and autumn in the Southern Hemisphere.
