Major Heat (Dashu) is the 12th solar term among the 24 solar terms and the last solar term of summer. It occurs annually on July 22nd or 23rd when the sun reaches 120° celestial longitude. "Dashu" means extreme heat, marking the hottest period of the year. Major Heat falls around the middle of the "Dog Days" (Sanfu), when most parts of China experience the year's highest temperatures, which can reach around 40°C (104°F). During Major Heat, yang energy reaches its peak and all things grow to their fullest, while also signaling that summer is coming to an end. Although the heat is unbearable, this is when crops grow fastest and need the most water, making it crucial for agricultural production.
