大寒是二十四节气中的最后一个节气。每年公历1月20-21日，当太阳到达黄经300°时为大寒。这个节气处在三九、四九时段，是一年中最寒冷的时节。大寒同小寒一样，都是表示天气寒冷程度的节气，大寒是天气寒冷到极致的意思。古人认为大寒比小寒更冷，因为此时冰的厚度与面积都达到年度最大值。大寒是一个生机潜伏、万物蛰藏的时令，标志着冬季走向尾声，春季即将到来。虽然冬至是太阳高度最低的时候，但一年中最冷的时候却是在大寒节气。

Major Cold (Dahan) is the 24th and final solar term among the 24 solar terms, occurring around January 20-21 when the sun reaches 300 degrees celestial longitude. This solar term falls during "third nine, fourth nine" period—year's coldest time. Like Minor Cold, Major Cold represents solar term indicating extreme cold weather—Major Cold signifies cold reaching its extreme. Ancient people believed Major Cold colder than Minor Cold because ice thickness and area both reach annual maximum. Major Cold represents a time when vitality conceals and all things hibernate, marking winter's end and spring's imminent arrival. Though Winter Solstice has lowest sun altitude, year's coldest time actually occurs during Major Cold solar term.
